Learning should be good better the best

Learning resources and products vary from printed booklets or PowerPoints through to fully customised online learning and blended learning solutions. Learning continues to evolve and at Lexlife we aim to develop along with it.

Our advice is, all learning is not equal. The way it was, is not the way it always has to be, and not all learning will make a difference, but great learning will make an impact!

In today’s busy work and life environments, we have all been reluctant to attend or complete learning. Not enough time, too much to do, already know it all, or just really don’t want to? We have all been a reluctant learner at some point.

Take a look at the learning elements below for the Lex perspective on what works, and what doesn’t.

Text

Text is where we all start. But let’s face it, if everyone liked to read, you wouldn’t need to make an online course. You could give learners a PDF and be sure that your information will be absorbed and used.

A reluctant learner will not read everything. If the text is longer than a tweet, maybe even a meme, it’s too long!

Plain Text Visual Context

Did you know?

The average person remembers pictures better than words.

If we gave you this list of 20 words to look at for 45 seconds and asked you to write down as many of them as you could, how many would you get?

If we did the same with the picture, there is a better chance that you would remember the picture, it’s context and the corresponding word labels with much better efficacy.

The design and presentation of your content to cater for all learners will make the difference in what information is retained.

Videos / Animation

Images are commonly used to simply distract from the text on the screen. Custom designed images can be created to represent the learning. Not everyone likes to read or listen. Some people need the visual diagram, explanation or information flow to understand.

A reluctant learner will have a better chance of learning if you provide every option for them to succeed.

Voice Over

Voice over is essential to cater for learners who cannot or will not read. It can read out or summarise the content on screen. It will also ensure that the resource is displayed on screen for the right amount of time.

A reluctant learner may not want to read, but will be forced to listen.

Interactions

Interactions are designed to ensure learner engagement. The learner must click to continue. It is the ultimate way we can ensure that the learner is present.

Examples: Click, drag and drop, slide, questions

A reluctant learner will click through your learning as quickly as possible without absorbing the information.
